American Cowboy: Alternative Landscapes

As the American landscape shifts, where do the legends that move across it go?

American Cowboy: Alternative Landscapes, curated by Kait Morrison, paired works by contemporary artists Grace Kennison and Jason Byron Nelson with pieces from Masur Museum of Art's permanent collection. The exhibition moved between abstract landscape, cartographic forms, and buried symbols to trace the cowboy across historical metanarratives and the decaying environment that once sustained him.

The exhibition’s opening reception featured a panel discussion with the curator, artist Grace Kennison, and film historian Dylan Howell. The conversation examined the cowboy’s evolution in American film and contemporary art, considering how its myths of masculinity and land ownership persist in visual culture today.
